Overall, while fans will always hold on to hope for an eventual Demon’s Souls 2, it’s unlikely to happen, though I’ll happily eat my words if it does. Bluepoint’s Demon’s Souls remake released alongside the PlayStation 5, where it was hailed as one of the handful of truly “next-gen” releases available that fall. Our review called it “breathtakingly gorgeous,” noting that it plays “significantly better” than it did on PS3. Now, I did encounter one interesting change that makes a particular sidequest slightly more complicated. I won’t spoil here but you can read about what has changed, if you want. There’s also a mysterious new door that players haven’t figured out, which could be something or nothing at all.
It’s really a shame that Bluepoint went through all the trouble to remake the game from the ground up, but didn’t fix these two things. Second, the camera angle is at its worst when you need it the most. This is nothing new to Souls games, so this probably won’t come as a shock to many of you. This is especially true in the Demon’s Souls remake, where you are often traversing a cliff’s edge or fighting a boss inside a small covered area. Each Archstone is a playground, a deadly and visceral playground yes, but one players can get lost in discovering things that lie deep below the surface.

Sony’s success with its first-party PC ports has been mixed lately. Helldivers 2 and Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut proved successful, but Returnal, LEGO Horizon Adventures, and Concord were disappointing. Previous to this remake few people would have said that Demon’s Souls was their favourite From game but that was largely because in its original state it was difficult to obtain and riven by performance issues. That is no longer the case, indeed the fast-loading of the PlayStation 5’s SSD instantly removes one of the greatest frustrations of the original, as death requires but a few seconds wait before you return to the action. FromSoftware has had nothing directly to do with this remake, with development instead being handled by American team Bluepoint Games, who worked on the excellent Shadow Of The Colossus remake. The approach here is very similar, in that although the visuals have been recreated from scratch the underlying level design and gameplay is almost identical to the original. There are some changes to help modernise the game, particularly in terms of the camera and the controls, but they’re still relatively minor. Two years after the launch of PS5, the console offers enough games to be a tempting option for undecided buyers.
All keys, rescued NPCs, and warp points are reset when starting a new game, so finish your exploration and collection of items before defeating this area boss. The original’s poor four direction rolling system made dodging enemy attacks hard. It was one of the things that increased the game’s difficulty in a frustrating way. Thankfully, players can breathe a sigh of relief because omnidirectional rolling is in the remake.
Like the Short Sword, the Broad Sword is another sword that falls a little short when it comes to length. Players need to get a little closer to get some hits in, but the damage is more than the Short Sword has to offer. Players will find that they can use the Broad Sword for almost any build as well. Players who participate in battle when invaded or who enjoy invading other worlds will like the upper hand in combat.
Demon’s Souls best starting class might not be the game’s most complex – but some are better suited for new players than others. The Blue-Eyed Knights drop a great weapon for the beginning of the game, the claymore. This strength weapon requires a good amount of levels to use, but it is well worth it. It is also worth the inevitable grind for players who are seeking to use it. Demon’s Souls is set in the cursed kingdom of Boletaria where a powerful demonic entity known as The Old One unleashes a deathly black fog that begins to engulf all of the land. A host of other demons and unholy creatures also appear, destroying the living and turning them into soulless monsters.
Be prepared for a long journey in the tower if you wish to complete it. After clearing the 1-1, you’ll be able to start leveling your characters and at the same time, the other archstones becomes available. You can now tackle any area you wish to complete first and it is entirely up to the player which one they wish to choose. Exploring Demon’s Souls’ world, the ruined kingdom of Boletaria, is immensely rewarding, with players constantly finding helpful items whenever they stray off the beaten path.
No matter what players did, characters in the original turned out less than desirable. So far, no new story elements have been added, but with a broken Archstone still in the game, there is a possibility of DLC. For now, the changes have all been about enhancing gameplay in ways that the PS3 version couldn’t. The PS5’s Demon’s Souls remake is out and reviews have been nothing short of amazing.
Some may welcome such changes while others could argue that some of those quirks help set Demon’s Souls apart. For those who jumped into the Souls series a bit later, Demon’s Souls did things a bit differently than some of its sequels and spin-offs. That being said, some people would still prefer getting a copy of the original instead of playing the remake. To put this statement into context, here are reasons why the Demon’s Souls remake is a great option, along with other reasons why the original game is the best way to experience this classic. No matter how it is found, on the body of a defeating dregling or picked up from the Swamp of Sorrows, almost every player will come across a broken sword at some point in the game. Like Dark Souls, the broken sword is pretty much useless in battle and most players will leave it to decay in their storage.
